Estimating Tourism Revenue Through Visitors' Spending: Segmentation Approach Using Decision Tree Analysis
摘要
Tourism provides employment and business opportunities, which help boost the nation's economy. Consequently, visitor expenditure is one of the most significant components contributing substantial revenue to the tourism industry. Tourism receipts have been one of the indicators used to measure tourism contribution to GDP. However, this data type is only provided at national or state levels. Therefore, this study aims to determine visitor spending through a segmented approach as a proxy to estimate revenue for a famous tourist site in Malaysia, Perhentian Island. The study utilized a survey method, using a questionnaire to determine the spending of visitors according to the five categories: Food and beverages, Accommodation, Transportation, Entertainment & Recreation and Retail. Feedback from 929 visitors’ spending was run in CHAID to generate a regression and classification tree. International visitors for all expenditure types can be characterized according to demographic characteristics, namely country of origin. Italy was the biggest spender in Accommodations, F&B, Retail and second-biggest for Transportation. China was the biggest E&R and Retail category spender. Examining big spender preferences and accommodating them might increase their arrival on the Island. Overall, the Estimated Tourism Revenue of Perhentian Island for the year is MYR133,542,305.00. The study's findings will assist in planning tourism development, especially in accommodating the tourists’ demand.
