Advances and developments in information and communication technology, transportation and communication make it easy for people and societies around the world to connect and interact, to transact goods and services and to exchange ideas, without borders. This inevitable connectedness of societies across the globe simply called globalisation, led to an extensive network of economic, cultural, social and political interconnections and processes which goes beyond national boundaries. Technologically, globalisation led to new innovations and opportunities and information and communication sharing is quicker, faster and easier than before. Across all professions, the status quo had been negatively and positively interrupted. And this affected legal profession as legal practice is becoming internationalized in scope. This to further innovation within the legal profession, called “e-lawyering”. By this new trend, lawyers find it easy to collaborate with each other internally within their law firm and communicate externally with their clients and the courts. Nevertheless, in Nigeria there is no adequate provisions made for the application and growth of e-lawyering ether in legal practice for lawyers or in court management and administration for court officials and judges. Engaging in pure library-based research, this paper critically analyses some of these inadequacies jeopardising the implementation and application of e-lawyering in Nigeria. The study found several inadequacies in the legal provisions in regulating e-lawyering in Nigeria. The rules of the over 30 state high courts, tens of federal courts and hundreds of other lower courts and tribunals do not have provisions on e-lawyering. The institutions and agencies established to regulate legal practice in Nigeria do not have any comprehensive policies mandating lawyers, judges and court officials to use or apply e-lawyering in their legal services and works. Hopefully, the findings would contribute to the body of knowledge of legal innovations and digital usage of technologies within the legal profession.
