This chapter presents quite a recent project compared to the DTMF pager project of the previous chapter. Put side by side; these two chapters are a good indication of technological advances in 40 years; during this time, we have transitioned from discrete components to integrated systems, from analog to digital, from continuous-time to discrete-time systems, and from slide rules to sophisticated LabVIEW platforms. The chapter also emphasizes the importance of understanding the underlying discrete-signal processing. The signal processing has a firm mathematical background; this chapter uses some of that background. Mathematics is an essential tool in an engineer’s toolbox. In my career, I have learned that a sound knowledge of science and math accelerates success.
