Urban environments face ever growing challenges from road traffic, which is a significant source of both noise and air pollution. Noise pollution affects approximately 125 million EU residents at harmful levels, while air pollution remains a leading environmental health risk. The urgency to address these dual threats is underscored by ambitious EU policies like the European Green Deal, targeting a 90% emission reduction by 2050, and the Zero Pollution Action Plan, which aims to bring air and noise pollution to safe levels. In response, the CIRCLEAR project is pioneering a groundbreaking solution: an integrated barrier system designed to simultaneously reduce noise and air pollution. By combining the proven effectiveness of RUCONBAR (Rubberized Concrete Noise Barriers) with innovative APA (Air Pollution Abatement) technology, this project aims to create a next-generation product that offers superior environmental performance. This sustainable and circularly manufactured barrier not only mitigates urban pollution but also promotes structural stability and longevity. The CIRCLEAR barrier system leverages Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) expertise to optimize design, usability, and sustainability. Rigorous testing and monitoring will validate its ability to improve air quality, reduce noise, and ensure durability. A showcase installation will provide real-world evidence of its effectiveness, demonstrating its transformative potential for urban infrastructure. By addressing two major environmental challenges in a single, scalable solution, CIRCLEAR highlights the critical role of innovation and circular economy principles in creating cleaner, quieter, and more sustainable cities.
