Metastatic Orbital Tumors

Metastatic orbital tumors have increased in incidence as effective oncologic therapies have improved survival rates in patients with systemic malignancies. However, orbital tumors and their local effects can be the first clinical manifestation of an undiagnosed metastatic malignancy in about 15–50% of cases. The most frequent orbital metastases originate from breast, prostate, melanoma, lung, and gastrointestinal with a smaller subset originating from thyroid, renal cell, and neuroendocrine sites. The clinical patterns upon presentation of metastatic orbital tumors are mass effect, infiltrative, and inflammatory disease. A comprehensive study of orbital metastasis and survival outcomes over a 20-year period from a main institution in the United States found breast and renal cell origin to confer the best overall survival.
