Time for Peace in Times of War: Cinema as Existential Hope in Frantz (2016) by François Ozon (Dir.)
摘要
Times of peace or war depend on two forms of truth as two forms of understanding temporality, namely, time as the logical form of judgment or time as the open potencies of infinite duration, which implies two opposing ways of relating to the world: as a will to dominate or as a will to create, as a world of violence or as a world of generosity. In this chapter, we intend to demonstrate how cinema could be an art that dismantles the juridical time that legitimizes the will to dominate by the violence of war and generate an existential time for peace as a will to create bonds through generosity within individuals to recover their vital capacities. We show this by analyzing how what Gilles Deleuze calls crystal images in the film Frantz (2016) by François Ozon are able to falsify this identity between truth and judgment, liberating the vital potencies of the real as horizons of possibilities for new becomings where individuals are invited to believe again that life in this world is possible.
