Broadcasting and Film
摘要
The chapter discusses the history and development of radio, television and film in Nigeria, stating that broadcasting and film have emerged as powerful media of mass communication, cultural expression and social influence. Its focus on the historical evolution and socio-political significance of the broadcasting and film industries offers insights to the dynamics that defined the establishment of the pioneering radio stations, the launching of Africa’s first television station as a response to political reality and the initiative by the Western Nigeria political leadership, with other leaders taking a cue, until the military government eventually liberalized broadcasting through the enablement of private ownership of electronic media. Broadcasting, through radio and television, subsequently played significant roles in shaping public opinion, promoting national identity, and serving as a tool for education and entertainment. Film which has origins in the colony evolved to reflect societal values, challenging norms and influencing popular consciousness. The chapter also provides insights into regulatory frameworks and some developments in the aftermath of the changes in ownership and participation structures.
