This chapter chronicles the historical development of the Nigerian press, examines the political character of the press/newspaper and the periodical press, and advances the discussion on the historical development, functions and evolving nature of the press, with particular emphasis on its role in informing, educating and influencing public opinion. It argues that from early print publications to the rise of mass-circulation newspapers and specialized periodicals, the press has served as a critical pillar of the public sphere and democratic accountability. It has also reflected and reinforced social, political and cultural trends over time. In the modern era, the newspaper and periodical press face significant challenges, including digital disruption, declining print readership, and questions about media credibility and sustainability.
