The Hindu Kush-Himalaya (HKH)—the Tibetan Plateau and surrounding mountain region system, known as the “Third Pole” or the “Asian Water Tower,” is vital for global environmental health, sustaining nearly 2 billion people through its water resources. Despite extensive research on water quantity, water quality remains underexplored, with rising threats from climate change, urbanization, and agriculture. Recent studies reveal increasing contamination, particularly downstream, marked by pollutants and trace metals. This paper proposes the Himalayan Mountain Water Health (HMWH) framework, calling for an integrated, science-driven approach to monitor and protect water quality in this critical region.
