This chapter discusses the role of a participatory planning culture in promoting a just and sustainable transition. Traditional spatial planning methods, which rely on regulations and legislation, are no longer sufficient in addressing the specific and unique needs of different communities, cities and regions. Instead, innovations in this respect involve the implementation of adaptable strategies and tools that engage local communities and empower them to shape their own lives through participation, education, information and technology. The just green transition is a key undertaking that transcends sectoral boundaries and involves all relevant societal sectors and actors. The success of this transition depends not only on the technological and managerial aspects, but also on the commitment and positive attitudes as a part of the planning culture of communities. We examine the composition of public beliefs, values and mindsets in the various types of planning cultures, exploring its role in the just green transition.
