In 2023, Australian Labor Party regained control of Australia’s naturally Labor state, New South Wales (NSW). This marked the end of the Liberal–National Party Coalition’s longest rule in NSW (2011–2023). The extended period of Coalition government followed an equally extensive period of Labor government (1995–2007), although that period was riddled with scandals. The decade of Coalition dominance was characterised by a proliferation of market-oriented policies focusing on privatisation, major infrastructure, and economic developments. Party leaders then were generally held in high esteem by the voting public. This chapter provides an overview of the NSW Coalition rule. It examines the factors that allowed the Coalition to govern for such an extended period. It then discusses the policy innovations, directions, and ideologies that animated their approach to government. Overall, key policy issues such as infrastructure development, climate change, housing affordability, and the pandemic response have shaped the State's governance, with a growing emphasis on cooperative federalism and government-led initiatives.
