Social work is an observational science grounded in the belief that visual knowledge is necessary to empower clients and communities. Thus, how social workers imagine social welfare is relevant to how help is provided. Even reading the word social welfare conjures up images in our minds. What are those images? Where do they come from? Can they be altered, challenged, or replaced? Clear seeing promotes empathy and problem-solving capacity. The following two assignments respond to the above queries by exploring the unique relationship between cognition and photographic images by visualizing social welfare, specifically mental health, which allows students to see social problems more clearly to improve policy and practice.
