While green environments have protective effects on individuals’ physical and psychological well-being, people are also innately prone to connect with the nature, fostering pro-environmental attitudes and caring behaviours towards natural world. However, individual differences exist in this relationship, and human actions often threaten both environmental sustainability and well-being. Recent evidence has shown that individuals with high environmental sensitivity exhibit a particularly strong connection to nature, suggesting this individual trait influencing responses to nature and climate change. As highly sensitive individuals process stimuli deeply and react strongly, they are more vulnerable to environmental degradation but also show greater empathy and connection to nature, increasing the pro-environmental attitude. This chapter discusses the potential of high sensitivity trait as a resource for addressing climate change. Drawing on encouraging available empirical findings in adults, we propose that high sensitivity can foster resilience, help mitigate negative emotions linked to environmental degradation, and enhance a sense of agency in responding to climate challenges. We particularly emphasize the importance of fostering early-life contact with nature, which benefits all children but is crucial for highly sensitive ones, who may be more affected by environmental crises yet have the potential to serve as role models, inspiring greater environmental awareness.

摘要
