Resilient Cities of the Future: What Will They Look Like?
摘要
Resilience, that is, our capacity to both recover and renew ourselves in the face of a growing range of climate-related challenges, will occupy an ever more central role in our lives in the years ahead. Urban society, which is the realm that the majority of us inhabit, has the potential to continue to support thriving lives with access to nature supported by efficiencies and economies of scale. The New European Bauhaus, Nature Restoration Law, EU Green Deal, Biodiversity Strategy 2030 and UN Decade of Restoration outline an ambitious vision of cities of the future, one conducive to the preservation of essential ecosystems and natural habitats. This chapter explores this vision, the central importance of resilience as both a biological principle and normative vision that aims to support both human and environmental health and wellbeing. Re-naturing cities, applying planetary health perspectives, the co-creation of nature-based solutions, and the widescale application of nature-based interventions for health and well-being are amongst the pathways to cultivating a resilient city. This chapter examines prospects for their realisation and potential to not only secure our future but ensure that both we and wider nature thrive in the long-term.
