This chapter delves into the impact of national histories on contemporary discourses. In Britain, historical antagonism toward continental Europe overshadows concerns about Islam, shaped by its imperial past. Germany’s ambivalence toward Islam is tied to the legacies of Nazism and division, while in France, the tension between different forms of laïcité reflects a long-standing resistance to the visibility of Islam, influenced by the colonial past in North Africa. The chapter highlights how national identities are constructed in opposition to historical “Others”.
