Development of a Mobile-Based Gaze-Tracker for Enhanced Survey Responses: Integrating Eye Gaze as a Weight Factor in Answer Evaluation

With the increasing reliance on digital surveys for data collection, ensuring the accuracy and validity of responses is becoming more critical. Traditional surveys, relying on static choice options, often fail to capture individuals’ full intentions or reveal insights in their decision-making process. For instance, when an individual hesitates between two possible answers but must choose only one, such information is not visible in surveys. For this reason, the following paper introduces a novel mobile gaze-tracking application designed to enhance survey data quality by incorporating eye gaze data as a weighting factor to uncover subconscious decision-making processes. Our approach utilizes the front camera of mobile devices to dynamically track eye movements, adjusting the weight of responses accordingly. This real-time gaze tracking, enabled without additional hardware and compatible with mobile systems, is both accessible and cost-effective, making it feasible for widespread use in various research contexts. By integrating gaze data, our method provides a richer and more comprehensive understanding of decision-making processes in surveys, reducing biases inherent in self-reported data.
