The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) found that millions of people in the United States experience Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) each year [1]. IPV perpetrators use cognitive manipulation, coercion, and intimidation to control their victims, and increasingly enact these methods using internet-based technologies in a similar manner as cyber criminals use to conduct forms of cyber crime. The Authors contend that it is often challenging for professionals supporting vulnerable populations such as IPV survivors to address cognitive security vulnerabilities, due to a lack of technical knowledge or resources about how to address the specific types of tech-facilitated abuse used in technology enabled coercive control (TECC). While existing IPV prevention apps may provide cyber hygiene guidance, they do not address the threat of psychological manipulation experienced by IPV survivors or explain why this threat is exacerbated by their increasing digital footprint. Another challenge with present-day apps is that the support for digital safety for IPV survivors is limited and not customizable to specific TECC scenarios. In this work we propose a first step to provide more robust assistance for IPV survivors: a cognitive security solution in the form of an integrated intelligent assistant to augment clinical intervention capabilities. In particular, our proposal describes a situationally-aware cognitive security tool architecture that will integrate cybersecurity with clinical interventions to promote IPV survivors’ safety, agency, and resilience during recovery from IPV.
