Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that affects motor function. Evidence suggests that patients may also experience changes in sensory function, ranging from pure disorders of conscious perception to disturbed sensorimotor integration. One piece of evidence is the altered somatosensory threshold. To measure this threshold, the current perception threshold can be used, more specifically through sinusoidal electrical stimulation. This investigation aims to evaluate the sensory threshold and cognitive response of patients with PD. To achieve this, sinusoidal electrical stimulation was used at frequencies of 3 kHz, 250 Hz, and 1 Hz. Specifically shaped electrodes were used to achieve greater selectivity in relation to the type of sensory nerve fiber. Results indicated a significant increase in the sensory threshold at 3 kHz frequency. Additionally, the cognitive response of the PD participants exhibited alterations, given that the participants with PD reported sensations related to nociceptive fibers more frequently than healthy participants.
