Mortality Among Individuals With Parkinson’s Disease in Brazil Between 2013 and 2022: An Analysis of Occupational Exposure to Pesticides

Pesticide exposure has been linked to the development of Parkinson’s disease (PD) and increased mortality rates, however limited evidence exists for Brazil. The aim of this study was to look at the association between occupational pesticide exposure and PD mortality in Brazilian macroregions. For this purpose, a population case-control study was conducted using death certificates from Brazilians aged 18 and above who lived in one of Brazil’s macroregions and died between 2013 and 2022. Cases were defined as those who died as a result of PD, whereas controls were individuals who died from another cause. Pesticide exposure in the workplace was deemed a risk factor. The odds ratio and 95% confidence interval were estimated for each Brazilian macroregion. Among residents of the various Brazilian macro-regions who had some agricultural occupation before dying between 2013 and 2022, those in the South were the most likely to die from PD compared to residents with other occupations. Then, it is critical to advocate public policies that safeguard the health of agricultural workers and individuals with PD, reduce occupational risks and ensure safe working conditions.
