Natural products have always been a primary source of raw material for the development of phytotherapic and drugs. Brazil, as for its important biodiversity, has enormous natural potential for the screening and development of new medicine This potential for pharmacological application can be applied in the area of Tissue Engineering to repair or regenerate impared functions, and the control of inflammatory and oxidative processes that influences cell differentiation and regeneration, avoiding fibrosis. Gustavia augusta is a representative of brazilian biodiversity, widely distributed throughout Brazil and found in South America. This species is widely used in popular culture, as herbal medicine. The tree is used as an anti-inflammatory, in the treatment of leishmaniasis and gastroin-testinal disorders. Therefore, this study aims to compare the cytotoxicity induced by oxidative stress (with hydrogen peroxide) in the presence and absence of G. augusta organic extracts, to confirm a cytoprotective effect in Vero cell line. This cell lineage is indicated as a reference for citotoxicity assays which guides the medical device biological evaluation. The LD50 of hydrogen peroxide was calculated for the Vero lineage, and a considerable cytoprotective effect was observed in the tested concentrations, with reduction of up to 75% of cell death. These data are a basis for future applications of this organic extract for Tissue Engineering as induction agent, aiming to optimize regenerative processes.
