Synthesis, Characterization and Antimicrobial Evaluation of Nanostructured Silver Vanadate

The aim of this study was to synthesize, characterize, and evaluate the antimicrobial activity of nanostructured silver vanadate decorated with silver nanoparticles (β-AgVO3). β-AgVO3 was synthesized by a precipitation reaction between silver nitrate and ammonium vanadate and then characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The antimicrobial activity was analyzed using the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) test against Streptococcus mutans and Candida albicans. β-AgVO3 powder was obtained, which appeared macroscopically as yellowish-colored and microscopically as silver vanadate nanowires with metal spheres decorating their surface. The material had an MIC of 62.5 µg/mL for both microorganisms. It was concluded that the synthesis of β-AgVO3 was confirmed by TEM, and the nanomaterial exhibited antimicrobial activity against S. mutans and C. albicans.
