Evaluation of the Compression Resistance of Tracheal Prosthesis Walls

This article evaluates the compression resistance of tracheal prosthesis, specifically the Dumon and Montgomery stents, widely used to treat tracheal stenosis caused by tracheostomy or prolonged intubation. Compression testing is an important part of the quality assurance process for stents intended for implantation in the upper airways. The study was conducted using the Flat Plate Test, where a radial force is applied to the stent to simulate compression conditions. The goal is to measure the stents’ resistance to compression until their luminal area is reduced by half, imitating situations of clinical stress. The results showed that the central ring of the Dumon stent is the most resistant, providing better anchoring of the prosthesis. The study also highlighted the importance of controlled load application for the Montgomery stent to ensure accurate measurements. Measurements were taken in different sections of the stents, which allowed for the identification of critical areas for reinforcement and design improvements. We conclude that compression resistance testing is fundamental to ensure the durability and reliability of stents in clinical use. Based on the results, we recommend that this type of testing be incorporated into the quality assurance process for stents to ensure their safety and effectiveness. Additionally, the comparative analysis between different cross-sectional areas of stent models is essential to improve design and minimize risks associated with the use of these medical devices.
