The Mother type describes characters who function as mothers to human and artificial children within their films. None of the characters within the Mother type question or voice any dislike at becoming mothers, as if it were only natural that they should want it. These films explore the viability of artificial figures being caretakers of humanity’s future and find them well suited to the task. These depictions combine liberation and an associated innate inclination with the feminist dream of agency through their ability to choose being mothers and, in some instances, have full control over the reproductive process. Yet, they also appeal to the myth that all women want to be and would make good mothers. By appealing to this women-children association, these characters are more feminised because of the strength of that association within US and UK social and cultural gender fictions.
