This chapter presents the Girlfriend type, characters designed to be, presented as, described as, or who function as romantic partners to other characters. This type shifts from object to moral agent as its representations exhibit the ability to have a preference in their partner. The Girlfriend type creates a fable of female-presenting characters being subordinate and expendable instead of equal, superior, or in control of their narrative, or, in the case of this type, being in charge or at least equal in their relationships. While the Girlfriend type’s subtypes support the derivative, fetishistic depiction and function of its early representations, over time these depictions are gradually shifting away from this limiting representation. Their movement towards more subjective and dynamic performances suggests that both their contemporary US science fiction (SF) mythos and narrative trends are changing in response to the changes in gender role expectations and technological advancements.
