The Himalayan ecosystem, a critical global natural resource, faces mounting challenges due to climate change, deforestation, and unsustainable development. Effective governance is essential to sustain this unique ecological region, which spans several countries in South Asia and serves as the water source for millions of people. This chapter explores the governance frameworks for supporting the Himalayan ecosystem, focusing on the integration of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into regional environmental policies. Key SDGs, such as Climate Action (SDG 13), Life on Land (SDG 15), and Clean Water and Sanitation (SDG 6), are particularly relevant in addressing the complex environmental issues of the Himalayas. The chapter highlights current policies and strategies, including regional collaborations, national action plans, and community-based management approaches. It also assesses the challenges faced in policy implementation and the importance of transboundary cooperation between the Himalayan countries. Looking to the future, the chapter discusses strategies for adaptive governance, enhanced policy coordination, and the task of technology and local communities in ensuring the long-term sustainability of the ecosystem.
