Urban Risk Scenarios and Multi-hazard Interrelationships: An Example of Eastern Himalaya

India is called a ‘land of diversity’ due to the presence of a range of diversified landscapes from snow-capped mountains, deserts, plains, plateaus, and coastal plains. Due to its diversified landscapes, it becomes vulnerable to various kinds of natural hazards. In the eastern part of India, a tiny Himalayan state of Sikkim represents a unique blend of diversified landscapes within its boundary. It has topographic features of low flat land to highly elevated Kanchenjunga peak within an aerial distance of 114 km. Due to the sharp gradient change, the region possesses different climate types from sub-tropical to alpine. The general slope of the state is from north to south, on which a steep slope nearly occupies 43% of the total area and is highly susceptible to hazards. In the past, Sikkim is experiencing various kinds of natural hazards like landslides, earthquakes, flash floods, avalanches, GLOF, etc., since ancient times. However, the increased intensity and frequency of these natural hazards indicate a trend pointing towards climate-induced hazards such as GLOF, avalanches, etc. Despite all these challenges prevalent in the state, it also offers opportunities for those who wish to explore natural resources in terms of biodiversity, landforms, and geological features. It serves as a resource hub for enthusiasts from diverse fields who can use and decipher the nature’s signature.
