Study of the Technological Parameters of Surface Plastic Deformation for Monolithic Aircraft Panels by the Impact-Drum Method

The study subject in the article is the surface plastic deformation (SPD) process of solid wing and fuselage panels of an aircraft using the impact-drum method. The objective is to investigate the technological parameters of the impact-drum SPD method. The task: to model the impact-drum SPD process depending on the impact speed and ball diameter for three typical materials; to study the dependence of sample-test piece deflection on strengthening time. The following results were obtained. A finite element model of residual stresses from a single ball impact on plates made of three typical materials was created. Impact visualization of the ball flow was implemented by applying an indicator coating on the sample-test pieces. The optimal time interval for impact-drum hardening was experimentally determined. Further research may involve modeling the interference of compressive stresses in SPD from several closely spaced dimples following the impact of a balls flow.
