Iry-en-achti (called “Iry”), thought to be the first ophthalmologist, lived in Egypt around 2400 BC. In the age of the pyramids, there were many doctors and specialists who served the pharaoh. The royal court physician and high priest, Iry, held a number of titles. He was not only the “Ophthalmologist to the King, “but also”Doctor of the Abdomen of the King“ and the” Shepherd of the King’s Anus. “Excavation of the burial ground near the Cheops Pyramid revealed Iry’s limestone stele. A note of interest: Iry’s short name was written with the sign of the eye, the Egyptian hieroglyph for the sound ir.”
