From 1905, when the Austrian Eduard Zirm carried out the first successful penetrating keratoplasty (transplantation of the cornea) in humans in Olmütz (today, Olomouc, Czech Republic), there arose a need for storage options for corneal grafts. Vladimir Petrovich Filatov was the first to introduce the concept of storing human corneas. In the following years, various options for short or long-term storage as well as for organ culture of human corneas were published. Dr. Townley Paton established the first Eye Bank in New York City in 1944, and is regarded as the father of modern eye banking. With Helen Keller’s call in 1925 for the Lions to be the “Knights of the Blind,” Lions Clubs International became engaged in establishing Eye Banks worldwide. The first one opened in New York City in 1952.
