Cataract surgery and its predecessor, “couching,” is a discipline with a long tradition dating back to Babylonian times. A sharp needle inserted into the eye pushes the cloudy lens down into the vitreous of the eye. This technique leaves the optical pathway free, but has dubious long-term results. Because of the finances in less developed countries, this procedure, “couching,” is still practiced.
