Born in Basra (Iraq) in circa 965 CE, Alī al-Hasan ibn al-Hasan ibn al-Haitham (Alhazen) feigned insanity to avoid severe punishment by a vengeful caliph and was kept under house arrest from 1011 until the death of the caliph in 1021. During this time, Alhazen wrote his famous book Kitab al-Manazir, the Book of Optics. After the caliph’s death, Alhazen “miraculously” recovered. At the time of his death in 1039, he was living in the mosque in Cairo named for him, the “al-Azhar.”
