Ramsay Hunt syndrome (RHS) is thought to be infection by the Varicella zoster virus that involves nerves responsible for hearing, balance, ear sensations, and facial movements. Symptoms start abruptly and may consist of disequilibrium, and one-sided ear symptoms of pain, hearing loss, and tinnitus. Workup generally involves auditory and vestibular tests, and an MRI of the brain and internal auditory canals. There are no good treatments, though some investigators advocate treatment with steroids and/or antiviral agents. Symptoms are often severe, and recovery is usually poor.
