Tricyclic compounds were originally designed to treat depression, but over the years they have come to be used off-label for other diseases. In otoneurology, tricyclic compounds (usually nortriptyline or amitriptyline) are sometimes used for prophylaxis against migraine, including migraine-associated vertigo. Common side effects include drowsiness, dry mouth, and dry eyes.
