The Fukuda stepping test, sometimes also called the Fukuda-Unterberger stepping test, is a brief bedside assessment of equilibrium. During this test, the patient closes their eyes, and marches in place (with the eyes still closed) for a certain number of steps or a certain period of time, and then stops; outcome measures include how far the patient moves from the original spot and how much they have rotated. The test is neither sensitive nor specific for a particular vestibular disorder, but is sometimes used by clinicians to screen for vestibular asymmetry, such as unilateral vestibular weakness from vestibular neuritis.
