Some cancers of the head and neck are treated with radiation therapy, and this radiation can sometimes affect inner ear structures, resulting in symptoms such as hearing loss, tinnitus, and disequilibrium. If a screening otovestibular workup shows no other obvious cause, then it is medically reasonable to consult with an audiologist (for auditory symptoms) and/or a vestibular physical therapist (for symptoms of disequilibrium).
