Presidential candidates hope that you believe they stand for everything that makes America great. But how can they prove it? In this chapter, we examine Principle—when a candidate makes a claim as to what their values are and what they stand for. How do you determine if a candidate has made a principle claim? What role does the principle have in the debate? How can we, as audience members, judge it? When candidates claim a principle, we can compare it to our own values and see if there’s any similarity, harmony, discord, or tension between our values.
