Given that Presidential Debating won’t change anytime soon, what can we do with these events? In this chapter, rhetorical criticism is offered as a solution. In looking at what candidates said instead of what they “really mean,” we can use the debates as a grounding for improved political judgment. As audience members we can use four terms—Framework, Principle, Vision, and Action—to help structure candidate responses in ways that allow us to judge their quality and share that judgment with others.
