The Presidential Debates, as we know them today, are quite new. This chapter examines the role of debating in Presidential contests throughout American history, including one Senatorial Debate series that eclipsed them all—the Lincoln-Douglas debates. The chapter reviews how an ex-Democratic candidate, Federal Communication Law, and the League of Women Voters all had a hand in trying to help, but ultimately the Commission on Presidential Debates decided to ruin the debate for us all in the end.

The Presidential Debates, as we know them today, are quite new.
