Extreme Experiences: Social Exclusion of Young Users of Inhalants, Crack, and Heroin in Mexico
摘要
This work is based on research on the use of inhalants (2011–2016) and crack, or “piedra” (2011–2013), in Mexico City (CDMX); the use of heroin on the Mexico-US border (2017–2019); and substance use in immigrants returning from the United States to the CDMX (2020–2024). It presents the discourses of psychoactive substance users, who question and sometimes assume a stigmatized image that is the basis of discrimination and criminalization. This discourse includes a set of concepts elaborated from socializing institutions (family, school, state, and religion) and from various natural and social scientific disciplines developed by the adult world that labels them as “drogadictos,” “viciosos,” “malvivientes,” “delincuentes,” and more specifically as monosos (inhalant users), piedrosos (crack users), tecatos (heroin users), or cholos (immigrant substance users).
