The word “violence” originates from the Latin violentia, which means the act of violating, encompassing physical, sexual, moral, and verbal violations, as well as coercion or psychological force, often in contexts of unequal power relations. The approach to this issue in everyday life is linked to various theoretical perspectives. It is a complex issue with multiple dimensions, rooted in macrostructural determinants, encompassing public spaces, collective environments, self-harm, and interpersonal or intrafamilial contexts. This chapter aims to examine the association between violence in intimate relationships, substance use, and gender inequalities. The discussion begins with the bioecological perspective of human development, considering the structural and contextual aspects in which these phenomena occur. Additionally, the importance of collective public policies aimed at preventing and reducing this issue in Brazil is emphasized.
