This chapter examines the ethical implications of using Generative AI in postgraduate research, with a focus on accountability, transparency, and generative AI governance. It reviews the current AI policy landscape in the UK and beyond, contextualising accountability and transparency within higher education, and evaluates existing frameworks, proposing additional measures to enhance these aspects. This includes ensuring that generative AI-driven research upholds ethical standards and continues to make both impactful and authentic contributions to academia. Furthermore, the chapter will explore the role of higher education institutional policies in guiding postgraduate students’ responsible use of generative AI tools for research, highlighting the importance of clear, accessible guidelines and support systems. The aim is to raise awareness among postgraduate students about current generative AI policy discourse and developments for academic pursuits. Additionally, the empirical case study, offers a way to empower postgraduate students to address biases in their work whilst showcasing an example of ethical and transparent generative AI institutional governance. By analysing existing policy frameworks within the wider sector, we aim to critique yet further cultivate responsible and innovative research environments.
