In this chapter, the current concept of trauma and the diagnoses of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and complex trauma (C-PTSD) are introduced (Bruscia, 2012; Herman, 1992/2022; Saraneva, 2018; Stubley, 2022a; Sutton, 2002; van der Kolk, 2014; van der Kolk & McFarlane, 1996/2007). In addition, traumas and how they may manifest in the people and client’s life will be depicted, including the basic diagnostic trauma symptoms. The history of understanding traumas in the context of psychology, medicine, and psychoanalysis will be described from Janet and Freud to Herman and van der Kolk and other contemporary theorists, researchers, and therapists such as Mark Solms and Oliver Turnbull (2002/2018).
