Globalization has accelerated the prevalence of non-standard work activity and unskilled, low-status/low-paid employment, which are reproduced in the informal economy of host societies due to the presence of a migrant labour force. Using qualitative research methodology, the analysis focuses on male Pakistani street vendors in Athens, Greece, via in-depth interviews. When they are unable to find work in the textile industry, the restaurant sector, food delivery, or agriculture or experience long-term unemployment, Pakistanis are led into the itinerant trade. Various categorizations were identified: itinerant peddlers of various merchandise; itinerant flower peddlers; itinerant tissue peddlers; pamphlet distributors; lottery sellers; and shop and car window cleaners. Pakistani migrants are trapped in the informal economy in a context of precarious living and working conditions that affect their perceptions regarding healthcare and quality of life. The migrant street vendors’ daily strategies and working conditions have far-reaching effects on their quality of life, and lead them to neglect their health.
