The introduction to this edited book situates the emergence of the four Southern European countries of Portugal, Spain, Italy, and Greece as a “go-to” destination choice for South Asian migrants in recent years. Faint historical and colonial links with the region do not account for the sharp rise in the presence of people from Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka there. The chapter traces the current diverse migrant trajectories and experiences of people from South Asia within the larger migration governance, labour regimes, and family reunification policies operative in the four Southern European countries. Differences in class and educational attainments, gender, and cultural, ethnic, and religious identities define their distinct and varied aspirations to migrate to Southern Europe just when it is turning its back on welcoming immigrants.
