Part II of the book is about inclusion of forces and moments in the analysis. It starts with the static equilibrium analysis of mechanisms in Chap. 10 that incudes discussion of two- and three-force members as well as force analysis in spur gears. Up to this chapter, motions in mechanisms have been analyzed with no consideration of the forces and moments that generate them (motion without forces). In this chapter, another task is performed, i.e., forces are included in the analysis, but the study is limited to cases where the applied forces and moments on a body or a mechanism are in static equilibrium (forces without motion). In this chapter, the aim is to calculate static forces that apply on members that are in static equilibrium. Calculating the required dimensions of these members so that they can withstand the applied or induced loads is not dealt with here and it is the subject of machine design and strength of materials.
