Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a computer-enabled multi-disciplinary communication, collaboration, and coordination process. A BIM model is a consolidated digital data repository of a design, which facilitates seamless information exchange between stakeholders during a project lifecycle. BIM is the industry standard in the design and construction sector. This chapter explores the use of BIM as a collaborative design platform, including a detailed examination of BIM-enabled online collaboration processes using semi-structured interview data (n = 25). Following these results, it presents a new BIM knowledge framework that is founded on a collaborative design thinking approach. This new framework adopts emerging ontologies and technologies that enable collaborative design thinking and decision-making through better support for design representation and communication amongst users. The framework has clear synergies with the concept of a Digital Twin (D-T) and BIM is pivotal to implementing innovations arising from this digital ecosystem.
