Anger needs to be limited in civil society. Violence must be limited and conflicts assuaged. On the one hand, we need to inculcate tolerance and civility to keep some conflicts from erupting. On the other hand, we need citizens to care actively about justice and injustice. These two demands conflict and they both have their dangers. Tolerance can often lead to apathy in the face of things that we should not tolerate. Politics and political activism necessarily becomes a conflict over views about what is just and what is unjust. Politics requires that the contestation stay as a contest, an agon, rather than polarized into civil war. How do we both maintain the necessary civility in modern society, particularly in a pluralistic and tolerant society, and yet respond to the role of anger in the pursuit of visions of justice and its role in motivating political activity?
