This chapter maps the key attributes and dynamics enabling community-based organizations (CBOs) to prioritize socio-ecological concerns despite operating within broader contexts dominated by unsustainable production-consumption systems. Using systems mapping, the analysis visualizes the variables, links, and feedback loops emerging from empirical data. The map reveals how CBOs’ characteristics, such as openness, diverse value recognition, and autonomy-supportive settings, maintain focus on meeting basic needs sustainably. Central dynamics include the antagonistic relationship between ethical and aggressive coordination, and how CBOs create environments where access to needs satisfiers becomes possible through empowerment and autonomy. These organizational features form a self-reinforcing system that enables CBOs to resist pressures to prioritize profit-maximizing surplus while maintaining socio-ecological priorities.
