This chapter discusses the characteristics of the creative individual and how these qualities can be enhanced to promote achievement. It gives examples of methods for nurturing the student’s natural curiosity and inclinations while adapting thinking patterns for the twenty-first century. It explores theories on intelligence and fixed and growth mindsets, and explores strategies for encouraging students to think. The chapter outlines the stages of the creative process and provides multiple examples of how to change the frontal-based learning of yesteryear into dynamic lessons that will engage learners: thinking tactics to solve problems, lateral thinking using de Bono’s “Six Thinking Hats,” teaching techniques that promote independent learners such as those by Eric Mazur and Sugata Mitra, and useful changes in the learning environment.
