The aim of this chapter is to highlight the transformative power of positive interpretation in swapping irrational or inaccurate thoughts during clinical practice. Positive interpretation is a new way of looking at challenges and disorders in a new perspective. Traditionally, challenges and disorders are interpreted negatively and the capacities at the back of disorders are neglected. Positive interpretation can enhance the therapeutic relationship especially in managing thought distortions, regulating emotions, and promoting adaptive behavior. The common cognitive distortions reported by clients during therapy sessions include all-or-nothing thinking, overgeneralization, filtering out positives, mind-reading, catastrophizing, emotional reasoning, labeling, fortune-telling, and personalization. With positive interpretation, these distortions can be flexible and changed into rational thoughts. Positive interpretation can support long-term well-being. Further, positive interpretation supports the development of essential skills, reduces stress, and enhances confidence. As clinical experience indicates, positive interpretation serves clients in developing new resources, enhancing life balance across physical, social, and spiritual dimensions. Effective utilization of positive interpretation is made possible by understanding clients’ personal, social, and environmental factors. Setbacks or relapses may happen at any time during the therapeutic process. Therefore, therapists should pay due attention to the five-stage consultation process. Ultimately, positive interpretation serves as an igniting tool for reshaping thought distortions and strengthening resilience.

摘要
